The Samartex Schools
In line with its social responsibility programme, Samartex is involved in providing education for children of the community as well as the company’s staff up to the Junior Secondary level.
Kindergarten:
The Samartex Kindergarten established in 1975 by African Timber & Plywood (AT&P) was inherited, along with most of the company’s assets, when Samartex took over the operations of AT&P. Samartex assumed responsibility for the school in May 1995.
The school runs 3 streams, Nursery 1 and 2, and Kindergarten 1. It has a staff strength of 8 including a Head Teacher, Mrs Gladys Kludje, and has an intake capacity of 230 for children aged 3 – 5 years. The children after 4 years proceed to the Primary School.
Primary:
The Samartex Primary School, like the Kindergarten, was established by AT& P in 1975. The school was taken over by the Ghana Education Service (GES) after the collapse of AT & P in1990.
Currently, the school is being run jointly by the GES and Samartex with shared responsibility for the teaching staff.
Under the leadership of S B K Okwan, the Headmaster and his 10-man team, the school is working hard at laying a solid academic foundation in the basic subjects.
The school as at now (2004), has an enrolment of 549.
Junior Secondary School:
The Samartex JSS, like the Primary, was converted into a public school when AT & P collapsed. Since taking over the assets of AT & P, Samartex has been responsible for the management of the JSS as with the other schools.
The JSS has a student population of 195 and a staff strength of 6 with Mr Sulley Ayagyiba as Headmaster. Academically, the school ranks amongst the best in the circuit.
The company continuously supports the school in diverse ways: provision of stationery, sporting equipment, renovation of infrastructure, provision of furniture and payment of non-GES teachers salaries.
Samartex’s overall objective for the schools is to further develop the infrastructure, strengthen the teaching staff and provide material and equipment that present the children with similar facilities enjoyed by their counterparts in better known and recognised institutions.
Work will soon start on two additional school blocks for both the JSS & Primary schools to take care of the two streams that the Schools currently operate. The Ghana Educational Trust Fund (GETFund) recently approved an application by Samartex for assistance in putting up the school block for the JSS. Work is expected to start by mid-June and is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Construction of the Primary School Block also scheduled for completion by the end of 2004, will be undertaken by Samartex.
Samartex as part of its social obligations to the community, and its own staff is resolved to ensure that the Samartex schools become one of the best in the region in the provision of quality education.
