Apprenticeship Programme

Apprenticeship Training

Hitherto, the apprenticeship-training programme had not been formally structured. Junior and Senior Secondary School graduates selected for apprenticeship-training naturally matured into permanent employees.

The way forward

To make apprenticeship training worthwhile, and more acceptable as first a social responsibility and, second, a human resource development strategy, structures are being put in place to commence a full-scale apprenticeship-training programme in 2004.

Structures/Scope

Apprenticeship Training shall be organized mainly in the Wood Utilization and Engineering sectors of Samartex. Departments in these major sectors where apprenticeship training would be pursued are:

Wood Utilization
  • Sawmill
  • Saw shop
  • Veneer Mill
  • Ply Mill

  • Engineering
  • Transport
  • Mechanical
  • Electrical

Entry Requirements / Duration of Programme

The programme shall be open to JSS & SSS graduates within the ages of 18 and 23.
Applicants will normally write an entrance examination and attend an interview to discuss their expectations and how they can benefit from the course. Final selection shall be based on motivation and ability to undertake the programme successfully.

All apprenticeship programmes shall be for a minimum of three years.

Content of Curriculum / Learning & Teaching Methods

The programme aims to develop and equip apprentices with the knowledge and skills to become effective workers in their chosen field. A vocationally focused development programme involving a developmental approach shall be adopted which will encourage actual thinking with a fusing of theory and practice. For purposes of experience sharing and quality delivery, there shall be close collaboration with sister Apprenticeship Centres such as Takoradi Technical Institute and the National Vocational Training Institute. Course content and assessment methods shall also be similarly structured. On successful completion, an apprentice shall receive national certification.

Skill development will also be integrated within the study programme. Formal teaching methods shall be combined with apprentice centred learning activities to enable them use their initiative, develop problem solving skills and develop the ability to explore knowledge base.

Studies in Samartex shall be supplemented with study tours to other Apprenticeship Centres in Ghana.

Infrastructure base

Physical infrastructure and machinery abound in Samartex for the commencement of the programme. Notwithstanding, for Samartex to run the programme on a full scale, both human and material resources would be required to supplement the existing ones.

Benefits

Enhanced employment prospects

The chance to share experiences and knowledge with others and the opportunity to develop further.
The opportunity to obtain national certification

The Samartex apprenticeship programme adds value to secondary school graduates in skill aquisition in a wide range of fields that include engineering and production.

A succesful completion of the programme positions the person with a competetive advantage over others in the labour market both in terms of chances and income.

  • read and write
  • solve basic mathematic problems
